Meet Clue!

February 6th, 2015 at 05:34 pm

Well, our new kitty came home Wednesday evening. She has a little cold and is recovering from getting spayed, plus she needs to be quarantined from our first kitty Noodles until we can take her to the vet and get her checked out. Plus we don't want them fighting. So she's living in one of our bathrooms. A few times a day we lock Noodles in another room and let her roam around the house.

They actually did meet the first night she was here...we humans had gone downstairs to watch TV with our neighbors. When we came back up the bathroom door was open; Noodles had apparently rattled the door hard enough to pop the little latch NT had installed. We don't know what went down but Clue was huddled in her carrier and didn't want to come out.

Since then she's regained her confidence, but whenever they're close to each other (on opposite sides of the door) they hiss. That didn't happen until the incident.

Oh well, just a bump in the road hopefully. We're going to take it really slow with introducing them to each other.

Anyway, here's a picture of our pretty little girl.

Oh what a cutie! The hissing is normal. They are claiming their territory. They will probably be curled up together soon enough!

What is the sex of each cat? I've found that 2 females usually don't get along whereas 2 males together do great.

I also had good luck introducing a new cat by keeping one confined to a room with the door closed. They gradually introduced themselves to each other by pawing (playing?) with their paws beneath the door. After that, they were fine together, but i would do everything gradually, when you're present to supervise what goes down.

Also be sure to give the cat who was there first lots of TLC and attention so it doesn't become jealous of the newcomer. To the point of ignoring the newcomer, initially. If the 1st cat is secure in its own skin, it should be ok with newbie.

1 male and 1 female, both fixed. (But not declawed, so we want to be careful!)

That's a good idea about giving Noodles more attention at first. We've definitely been petting him a lot since Clue came (and he's been asking for more affection, maybe because he's curious about her scent on us?). I wish he hadn't broken in that first night; now I feel like she thinks of him as more of a threat. But maybe she'd have started hissing anyway, once she regained her energy after her surgery.

A tip I've heard, and I've no idea if it really works, is to smear tuna oil on both cats and let them clean each other up. Smile Apparently they bond during the grooming session.
