Archive for June, 2026

Not a very exciting month. Our retirement assets decreased in value a little bit, probably about $7K across the board. This was mostly offset by our regular mortgage and window payments and by paying own our HELOC by a few grand, so overall our net worth decreased by about $1900. I should be able to pay down the HELOC some more, at least temporarily, but I'm waiting to see how next month's cash flow looks like before I do it. Had I known we were going to lose net worth, I probably would've paid down another $2K and been fine, but now that my June calculations are over, I won't do it til I have the July budget in place.
Even with the slight decrease we're still solidly in CoastFIRE status with a $272K surplus. According to those calculations we are already at Coast even if we planned to retire in 7 years (age 59 for me) instead of 13. Of course I'll still have kids in college and a mortgage in 7 years, so that isn't realistic, but it's cool to dream about. I may revisit the calculations at some point to see when it would be realistic to retire with a mortgage and dependents still in place (eg, figuring a much higher annual spend) and maybe factoring in Social Security income, which I don't currently factor into my Coast calculations.
And maybe there are other ways to think about this. I also may be underestimating some expenses, so full retirement may be farther off than I think, but maybe we could gradually scale back our work. For now I'm okay leaving my calculations as is because it's a helpful benchmark to measure our progress.
