Saved about $20 on Mother's Day gift

May 7th, 2013 at 10:22 pm

Whew! I went through a bunch of different sites to try and find affordable gift delivery, but every time, all the wire fees and shipping and handling and delivery charges would bring a $30 bouquet or gift to almost $60!

Finally I rooted around for a florist in my mom's area. They still do the Teleflora orders thing; clearly every florist available online is in on the whole nationwide network thing, but they had a local delivery charge of $8. Add in $1.50 tax, and I saved over $20 over the other sites.

The only other catch? I couldn't choose delivery before or on Mother's Day. *shrug* so I picked Monday. My mom is not going to be hurt if she gets her flowers a day late! It's just a day picked at random anyway, right?

This is why I usually get my parents DVDs or books for these holidays, or send them pics of the kids. But I didn't have any ideas this year and knew I had to get my order in soon or risk being way late, so I went the sucker's route.

My sister and I are going with flowers too. She had not yet ordered as of last night, but if they can have them ready she will pick them up. Good idea to go with a local florist...basically you cut out the middle man skipping the website.

I bought my mom two groupons for movie tickets at the local Studio Grill for Mother's Day. Cost $10 for two tickets. Told her to go to the movies with new hubby on me. Smile

It's true, you pay through the nose for flowers when you use the big guys. Delivery almost doubles the price sometimes!

Reminds me why I like Costco floral ... Shipping & handling included. No small/cheap bouquets, but at least you know exactly what it is going to cost you while perusing.

My mom is getting just a card this year, and I know she'll be fine with that. I no longer give obligatory Mom's Day gifts ... just occasionally give something when I either find something really unique that she would love (several years ago it was an organic mushroom sampler) or something she really needs (like a new refrigerator). She will probably need a new clothes dryer soon and so I am mentally saving up skipped gift occasions for that.
