Summary: I didn't do a net worth calculation in May because of our vacation, so this covers two months of progress. And, just like that, we're back up to $300K net worth! Retirement went up quite a bit, debt went down, but the biggest contributing factor was finding out that NT's home was worth 140K pounds instead of our estimated 125K. That right there added $24K to our assets.
I will update my "Individual Net Worth" page shortly so you can see how it breaks out per person.

Summary: We haven't had as much progress as I would have hoped because of a student loan payment hung up in the ether somewhere, and some freelance checks we haven't received. Despite that, we had modest gains in all our retirement funds and got rid of a bit of debt, so we did all right.

Summary: It looks terrible, but actually we did very well in retirement fund performance, debt payoff and savings.
What happened is I "trued up" our accounts using the current pounds-to-dollars exchange rate, reassessed our home values, and moved some money out of the EF into our medical fund (which I don't count among our assets).
Now we can start building toward a TRUE net worth of $300K.
I will update my "Individual Net Worth" page shortly so you can see how it breaks out per person.

Total Debt: $299,943
Current Estimated Net Worth: $308,187
August 2012 estimate: $299,508
Change in net worth: +$8,679
Summary: We did it! We surpassed the 2012 goal of $300,000 net worth. (On paper, that is.)
I'm going to "true up" our accounts soon using the current pounds-to-dollars exchange rate and reassessing our home values, so our debt, assets and net worth are all going to go way down.
I will update my "Individual Net Worth" page shortly so you can see how it breaks out per person.
Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are very approximate. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). UK asset values and debt amounts are calculated figuring $2 for every British pound, which was the exchange rate when I started keeping track. Summary: Well, we paid off debt and added to savings, but it wasn't enough to offset the stock market fluctuations this month; we dipped down below my 2012 goal of $300K net worth.
But, we're only $492 off. I feel confident that we can make that amount up in the December net worth tally and still make our goal.
I will update my "Individual Net Worth" page shortly so you can see how it breaks out per person.

Summary: Most of our retirement accounts stayed pretty stagnant (meaning they lost some value, since we did contribute cash to them all), but NT got a matching distribution in his 401(k), one of his UK funds had a significant rise, we added to the EF and moving funds, and we paid off a decent amount of debt. It all adds up! We were just $5 short so I put that amount in the moving fund to take us to our goal.
Our net worth topped $600K for the first time, and we have now reached our goal of $300K net worth! Now I just hope the markets hold out enough for us to keep this net worth through the end of the year.

We're at about the halfway point of the year, and we're about halfway from our starting net worth ($250,418) to our goal net worth ($300,000). With parental leave more than half over, and hopefully the expensive repairs on the rental property out of the way, we should be able to meet our goal -- as long as the EU crisis doesn't completely tank our retirement accounts!

Total Debt: $310,961
Current Estimated Net Worth: $269,679
April 2012 estimate: $272,065
Change in net worth: -$2,386
Summary: Sigh. Despite paying off a few thousand of debt and making our regular contributions of over a thousand to our retirement accounts, all our retirement accounts lost value more than that. Sometimes I feel like we're getting no returns on our retirement accounts. But, since I don't keep records of what I've contributed, I can't look up the truth to cheer myself up.
I maintain that ratio for the purpose of tracking progress, even though the exchange rate is now closer to $1.60 per British pound.

Summary: Decent progress. I was the dead weight, because both of my retirement funds decreased a bit. NT and AS both posted small gains, we put some money away in the EF, and we paid down a good amount of debt. If our net worth increases by about $3492 per month for the rest of the year, we'll hit our $300K net worth goal. It's doable.

Summary: Wow, we hit the quarter-million mark! NT's bonus pushed us over the edge because we were able to pay extra debt down with it. I didn't calculate net worth in November, which is why the leap is so drastic. Oh yeah, and we were able to shift money from NT's UK checking account into savings this month.

Summary: Nearly $7,000 gain! NT's federal loan site is still being dumb, and my payment from last Monday still hasn't posted. If it had, we'd have close to an $8,000 gain. Still, this brings us to our highest net worth yet, beating our last high of $235K in July! Most of this was our retirement accounts making up losses.

Summary: Considering the stock markets just took a dive and all our retirement accounts lost value, we got off pretty easy. But it was only because we paid off enough debt to offset most of our losses. AS's net worth will have suffered, since but I think we can still get her to positive before the end of the year.

Summary: Ugh, I knew I wasn't going to like this month's results. Despite over $2K of debt payoff, our retirement accounts lost so much value that we're down for the month. I imagine we've lost progress on AS's net worth goal as well. I think all this market volatility is just shortsighted silliness that will clear up in a month or two, so I think we'll gain it back soon. But I don't really know.

Summary: We lost value in all our U.S. retirement accounts, and our debt paydown was very modest, so we posted a loss in net worth for the first time in many months. At least it was only in the hundreds, so it doesn't feel too bad. AS's contributions and debt repayment outweighed her investment losses by about $480, so at least we made a bit more progress toward positive net worth for her.

Summary: We lost some ground in our EF savings, but I was able to access NT's 401(k) finally after two months of no access (solution: his company had switched providers completely!), and we had gains in all our retirement accounts, so we still posted a respectable gain in net worth this month.

Change in net worth: +$9,309
Summary: I wasn't able to access NT's 401(k) account online AGAIN. Second month in a row, so I wrote to tech support for that website. Anyway, we still did really well thanks to gains in retirement investments plus paying off one of AS's student loans.
I will update my "Individual Net Worth" page shortly so you can see how it breaks out per person.
Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are fairly conservative. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). UK asset values and debt amounts are calculated figuring $2 for every British pound, which was the exchange rate when I started keeping track. I maintain that ratio for the purpose of tracking progress, even though the exchange rate is now closer to $1.60 per British pound.

Summary: I wasn't able to access NT's 401(k) account online today, so I couldn't record the probable gains (based on AS and I making leaps in our accounts). But it hardly mattered in light of the big overall gain this month! My dad gifted us $12,900, and I put over $11,000 of that directly toward our net worth, including retirement savings and debt pay-down. So it's exhilerating but hardly surprising that our net worth has topped $200,000. A great way to end the year!
