Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. Total Debt: $482,768

Current Estimated Net Worth: $503,350

November 2015 estimate: $500,403

Change in net worth: +$2,947

Summary: Ever since I've had money to contribute to retirement, performance has been dismal. For instance, I contributed over $4K this month but our balances are only up $2K, which means we actually lost $2K in value. Oh well, buying low, buying low. At least I did contribute enough and pay off a bit of debt, so our net worth went up some.

Current Estimated Net Worth: $496,161

September 2015 estimate: $479,334

Change in net worth: +$16,827

Summary: Our retirement accounts haven't quite recovered their value (my 401(k) was up over $85K at one point and now is less than $83K), they've recovered enough to show the benefit of our recent contributions and debt paydown. We'd previously lost nearly $10K of net worth over two months; now we've made that back plus nearly $7K more.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). NT's flat: 180,000 pounds ($288,000)
CJ/NT/AS house: $440,000
---
Total Assets: $965,040

Total Debt: $485,706

Current Estimated Net Worth: $479,334

August 2015 estimate: $486,035

Change in net worth: -$6,701

Summary: Despite dumping a couple thousand into retirement and paying off nearly a thousand of debt, our net worth is down -- more than doubly as bad as the $2800 dip we suffered from July to August. We've now lost nearly $10K in net worth value over two months. For a short while, our assets were worth more than twice our debt amount. That is no longer the case, since our net worth is now less than our debt amount.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). CJ's Roth IRA: $8,926
NT's flat: 180,000 pounds ($288,000)

Total Assets: $972,717

Total Debt: $486,682

Current Estimated Net Worth: $486,035

July 2015 estimate: $488,922

Change in net worth: -$2,887

Summary: Well, as could be predicted, our net worth was down this month despite paying down some debt and dumping a few thousand dollars into our retirement accounts. Hopefully just a temporary slump.

I'll update the Individual Net Worth page shortly, breaking it out by person.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. July 2015 net worth update

July 31st, 2015 at 08:32 pm

Assets:
NT's UK pensions:
#1: 17,105 pounds ($27,368)
#2: 20,501 pounds ($32,801)
#3: 4,452 pounds ($7,123)
NT's 401(k): $37,674
NT's Roth IRA: $7,681
AS's trad. IRA: $15,288
AS's Roth IRA: $24,853
AS's SEP IRA: $4,086
CJ's 401(k): $84,017
CJ's Roth IRA: $7,681
NT's flat: 180,000 pounds ($288,000)
CJ/NT/AS house: $440,000
---
Total Assets: $976,572

Total Debt: $487,650

Current Estimated Net Worth: $488,922

Last estimate (mid-June): $485,086

Change in net worth: +$3,836

Summary: Nice bump in net worth. Since I updated my net worth schedule and already noted July 1 debt repayment, the debt amount didn't change at all, so this is entirely retirement gains and new contributions. I would like to see our retirement account value increasing by $5K-$6K per month, but I'll take $3800 for now. I'll continue to get more aggressive about contributions as more money is freed up in our regular budget.

I'll update the Individual Net Worth page shortly, breaking it out by person.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). June 2015 net worth (starting new schedule)

July 4th, 2015 at 08:06 pm

I've decided to update net worth at the end of each month instead of mid-Month. I only started that schedule randomly. It makes more sense to do it this way! I'm a couple days late on it; next month I'll try to do it Aug. 1 or thereabouts.

Assets:
NT's UK pensions:
#1: 17,105 pounds ($27,368)
#2: 20,501 pounds ($32,801)
#3: 4,452 pounds ($7,123)
NT's 401(k): $36,967
NT's Roth IRA: $7,673
AS's trad. IRA: $15,258
AS's Roth IRA: $22,625
AS's SEP IRA: $4,082
CJ's 401(k): $83,166
CJ's Roth IRA: $7,673
NT's flat: 180,000 pounds ($288,000)
CJ/NT/AS house: $440,000
---
Total Assets: $972,736

Total Debt: $487,650

Current Estimated Net Worth: $485,086

Last estimate (mid-June): $420,169

Change in net worth: +$64,917

Summary: Even more awesome change in net worth! Our retirement accounts stagnated, but we got an update on NT's flat's value. Similar units are now selling at 200,000 pounds! I decided to shave 10% off that value for the purposes of the net worth, since it would cost something if we decided to sell it. Even with taking off 10%, our net worth still increased nearly $65K, and our assets are approaching $1M at a good clip.

I'll update the Individual Net Worth page shortly, breaking it out by person.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). Total Debt: $488,621

Current Estimated Net Worth: $420,169

May 2015 estimate: $381,007

Change in net worth: +$39,162

Summary: Awesome change in net worth, though it could have been even better. I started a new retirement account for AS with nearly $4100 in it and added $1800 to her Roth as well as my and NT's regular 401(k) contributions, but we lost over $3000 total among our other retirement account values. We paid off over $39,000 of debt, but also added over $3000 of debt to the duplex mortgage when we refinanced.

I'll update the Individual Net Worth page shortly, breaking it out by person.

Summary: Modest gains and modest debt paydown equals a modest change.

Starting next month our retirement funds will increase faster. I can't wait!

I'll update the Individual Net Worth page shortly, breaking it out by person.

April 2015 net worth update

April 15th, 2015 at 09:19 pm

Assets:
NT's UK pensions:
#1: 17,105 pounds ($27,368)
#2: 20,501 pounds ($32,801)
#3: 4,452 pounds ($7,123)

CJ's Roth IRA: $7,780
NT's flat: 140,000 pounds ($224,000)
CJ/NT/AS house: $440,000
---
Total Assets: $902,921

Total Debt: $525,360

Current Estimated Net Worth: $377,561

February 2015 estimate: $366,009

Change in net worth: +$11,552

Summary: Apparently all our recent property doings -- including selling the condo at a loss -- and shifting around of debt did have a net positive effect! Some of this gain was due to decent performance of our retirement accounts, but a lot of it was from debt reduction.

It was kind of fun to have our assets worth over a million bucks, and now with the condo sale they're below that. But we'll get up there again eventually! At least our debt is getting close to going below the half-million mark. That'll be a relief.

I'll update the Individual Net Worth page shortly, breaking it out by person.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). Current Estimated Net Worth: $366,009

February 2015 estimate: $365,298

Change in net worth: +$711

Summary: This teeny-weeny net worth increase was only due to paying off debt. Our retirement values actually decreased slightly this month, losing more value than the money we put into them. Ouch!

I'll update the Individual Net Worth page shortly, breaking it out by person.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). Summary: Debt repayment couldn't outpace the market downturn that hit all our retirement funds, especially since we haven't been contributing anything to our Roths. Also, I downgraded the value of the US condo to our current sale price (though it's going to end up being worth less than that with the money we have to pay to sell it).

Current Estimated Net Worth: $346,493

July 2014 estimate: $379,845

Change in net worth: -$33,352

Summary: I decided to go with Redfin value minus 6% for the value of the new home, which means the debt we took on is greater than the asset value we took on. So that meant a large drop in our net worth. Also, the markets were flat to slightly negative and we didn't put as much into retirement as usual, so there was no help there to our net worth. And we didn't pay down much debt either.

Assets are up over a million dollars in worth! But that will drop back down once we sell our condo.

I'll update the Individual Net Worth page shortly, breaking it out by person.

Total Debt: $237,527

Current Estimated Net Worth: $379,845

June 2014 estimate: $375,997

Change in net worth: +$3,848

Summary: An OK growth month. We would have gone up about $450 more had we made our Roth IRA contributions, but those are on hold until December (we'll do make-up contributions for all the months we miss between now and then).

Next month, expect way bigger debt but also way bigger home value!

I included U.S. savings for a home in our assets, since the money will go toward our down payment on the new home, which will become an asset. I did not include our UK savings, because the UK flat's value listed above is contingent upon the renovations that will wipe out our UK savings.

I decided to include U.S. savings for a home in our assets, since the money will either go toward renovating (i.e. increasing the value of our current home) or to buying equity/adding value in a new home. Summary: The market must not have been good this past month; our retirement funds increased by less than what we contributed. At least there wasn't a huge dive. We only paid off a modest amount of debt, so our overall change in net worth is OK, but not spectacular. I'm hoping for a big month in the markets soon, so I can see our assets hit the $600K mark!
