Summary: We had a good run, but the market correction caught up with us a bit. Even with paying off nearly a grand in debt and adding at least $2K to retirement, we suffered a setback in our net worth. Probably not as bad as it was at its lowest point; I didn't check during those chaotic Dow days.

2017 year-end net worth update

December 30th, 2017 at 12:56 am

We won't see any more movement on our assets or debt for the year, so I thought I'd total up our net worth a little early.

Assets:
NT's UK pensions:
AV: 17,967 pounds ($22,459)
SW: 26,544 pounds ($33,180)
FL: 6,462 pounds ($8,078)
NT's 401(k): $61,822
NT's Roth IRA: $25,618
AS's trad. IRA: $19,105
AS's Roth IRA: $44,800
AS's SEP IRA: $22,231
CJ's 401(k): $123,753
CJ's Roth IRA: $29,728
NT's flat: $212,500 (200,000 pounds value x1.25 -15%)
CJ/NT/AS house: $427,281 ($454,554 value -6%)
---
TOTAL ASSETS: $1,030,555

US Mortgage $391,847
Loan from friends (duplex) $9,000
UK Mortgage 1 $33,571
UK Mortgage 2 $7,076
UK Mortgage 3 $7,453
---
TOTAL DEBT $448,947

Current Estimated Net Worth: $581,608

November 2017 estimate: $569,850

Change in net worth: +$11,758

Summary: Another big leap! Were it not for devaluing our US duplex earlier in the year, we would have blown past our $600K net worth goal for the year. We didn't make it, but I'm happy with where we are. I have a feeling we now undervalue our duplex, but better that than the alternative. If I get anything I feel is definitive proof, I'll updated our home value next year.

Compared with the end of 2016, here's how our net worth numbers fared in 2017:
Total Assets:
2016 $992,419
2017 $1,030,555
Change $38,136

Total Debt:
2016 $460,445
2017 $448,947
Change $11,498

Net Worth:
2016 $531,974
2017 $581,608
Change $49,634

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. (I do have my eye on a comparable listing for the UK flat, but it's been on the market a long time.) UK pension values updated about once a year. UK asset values and debt amounts are calculated figuring $1.25 for every British pound.

---
TOTAL DEBT $449,915

Current Estimated Net Worth: $569,850

October 2017 estimate: $561,332

Change in net worth: +$8,518

Summary: Not as huge a jump as the previous two months, but still good. And, we got our debt below $450K! That means the only financial goals we haven't reached this year are getting NT's 401(k) up to 10% and getting our net worth above $600K. (And refinancing the duplex, which turned out to not be a good option.)

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. (I do have my eye on a comparable listing for the UK flat, but it's been on the market a long time.) UK pension values updated about once a year. UK asset values and debt amounts are calculated figuring $1.25 for every British pound.

Current Estimated Net Worth: $561,332

September 2017 estimate: $546,722

Change in net worth: +$14,610

Summary: We somehow surpassed last month's progress this month! One of NT's pension values went up more than I'd thought, so that was a big help. We're now safely past the $1 million mark for assets! Since I know we're not getting to $600K in net worth, it's nice we hit one more of our other goals! We should hit the debt-below-$450K mark once I check our debt payments for November. Sweet!

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. (I do have my eye on a comparable listing for the UK flat, but it's been on the market a long time.) August 2017 estimate: $532,149

Change in net worth: +$14,573

Summary: Holy cow, what a month! Last month I felt there was no way we'd get to the million-dollar mark on assets, but now it's definitely possible to do it in three more months. Since I know we're not getting to $600K in net worth, it's nice to think we might hit one more of our other goals!

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. (I do have my eye on a comparable listing for the UK flat, but it's been on the market a long time.) Current Estimated Net Worth: $532,149

June 2017 estimate: $530,114

Change in net worth: +$2,035

Summary: Nearly flat month; the only progress was some debt payoff and a bit toward retirement thanks to contributions outpacing minor losses. I'm now doubting whether we'll reach the million-dollar mark on assets in 2017. It's also now even more unlikely we'll get to $600K in net worth this year; we'd have to gain about $17K per month to get there, which just ain't gonna happen.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. (I do have my eye on a comparable listing for the UK flat, but it's been on the market a long time.) Summary: Slowly working toward the million-dollar mark on assets. Not sure we'll get to $600K in net worth since I devalued the homes last month, but maybe.

Irrational exuberance that there's going to be a big economic boom thanks to destroying environmental regulations and workers' rights. Don't buy that it's good for the economy long term.

October 2016 estimate: $513,295

Change in net worth: +$9,699

Summary: The market showed some gains this month, so we regained about a quarter of the net worth we lost last month due to my downgrading the value of the British pound. Two more good months and our assets should be up over a million again.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. (I do have my eye on a comparable listing for the UK flat and one for the US duplex, but no movement on them as yet. Took our total assets below a million for the first time since May, and our net worth to its lowest since March. Ah well -- it's just a math thing. We'll build back up.

Total Debt: $475,634

Current Estimated Net Worth: $543,746

May 2016 estimate: $529,251

Change in net worth: +$14,495

Summary: I was shocked by this huge jump! I went back to make sure it was accurate, and it is. About $9K of it is due to retirement fund growth and contributions (including $2750 to AS's Roth). The other $5K is because I realize that last month, I switched the exchange rate on NT's pensions and home value but not on NT's mortgage debt. So changing the exchange rate from $1.60 to $1.50 gave us another $5K jump. Hard to believe it was that much!

Doing this early since I won't get to it while we're on vacation in England ...

Assets:
NT's UK pensions:
#1: 17,105 pounds ($25,658)
#2: 20,501 pounds ($30,752)

CJ's Roth IRA: $13,246
NT's flat: 180,000 pounds ($270,000)
CJ/NT/AS house: $470,000 (value -6%)
---
Total Assets: $1,010,083

Total Debt: $480,832

Current Estimated Net Worth: $529,251

May 2016 estimate: $519,476

Change in net worth: +$9,775

Summary: Boy, what didn't happen this month?!? I revised our U.S. home value up, but also added $4K of debt to our friends (see previous post for explanation). I changed the British pound exchange rate from $1.60 to $1.50 in light of the EU nonsense. (Current rate is $1.37 but I do believe it'll stabilize from there, so I went with the general average of the past few years.) So NT's retirement and home values decreased. However, all our U.S. retirement accounts were up this morning (no doubt the Brexit panic will be reflected in tomorrow's balance, so I snuck in just in time!)

Lots of ups and downs, but overall gain of nearly $10K. And our assets are up over a million for the first time since we sold the condo!

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). UK asset values and debt amounts are calculated figuring $1.50 for every British pound.

Summary: It's so funny how it works. We're postponing Roth contributions until the second half of the year, and yet our net worth saw a pretty good leap. Not recovering all of last month's loss, but up over half a million again.

Notes on the numbers above: House value estimates are approximate. I don't have a way to check NT's UK pensions or flat value, so their values stay static for the purpose of this update (unless I happen to get some info by chance). UK asset values and debt amounts are calculated figuring $1.60 for every British pound.
