Gratitude photo #23

January 24th, 2016 at 06:11 pm

It's hard to cook with even one of the kids, let alone both of them, but they love it. So I was grateful that NT got the idea to make blueberry muffins with the kids yesterday, and actually managed to keep them focused the whole time! Oh, and we had the muffins this morning -- delicious.

Love the photo, tells a huge story about each. while I appreciate it takes so much longer to cook/bake with DKs there is a huge payback on several levels. Cooking is a terrific way of demonstrating math lessons. I like that it teaches and offers hands on planning and organizing skills. It allows for a lot of creativity and thinking outside the box which is so absent with teens [I see] these days. Of course there are long term practical skills, they'll need to cook in the future. From a parental view, great to have extra hands who can prep and start or get 'X' from the fridge and put it in the oven to bake/roast, ready when everyone gathers for dinner.

As a newly wed, I was so handicapped as a novice in the kitchen. Every meal for a year was an experiment that hovered on disaster. Since DH was from 'men don't cook' mind set. I made it a point to have DSs participate in meal preparation and do age appropriate tasks. They thought it was fun. One unexpected benefit was huge saving for DS2's living expenses in university when his roomies realized he could cook. In exchange for shopping and meals he wasn't required to pay rent, utilities or food. Those costs were divided between other members of the house.

Not only is it quality time for both adult and child, it is a life skill. It is shocking how many young adults I work with who admit they really don't know how to cook, thus they don't. I want to tell them as they constantly check their phones YouTube has amazing videos, but I figure they don't really care to learn. Each year I have been at the school I'm currently working I have baked bread with the kindergartners. We do it for two reasons...to talk about where food comes from and also show them that you can make things from scratch. Years ago when I had more time and more a flexible schedule, I baked bread with every intermediate classroom...I took four kids at a time and we made bread. The kids who baked with someone had stories to tell about it, and the kids who didn't, loved doing it and then had their own stories.

That is a great picture! I bet your kids will have some great memories from times like these.

Thanks everyone! snafu, what a great story about your son! Who knew learning to cook would have such big financial rewards for him.
