Where do you keep your will?

November 30th, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Now that we've got our wills finalized, notarized and signed, we have to decide where to keep them. The lawyer said the two main choices were a fireproof safe or a bank safe-deposit box. Those of you who have wills, where do you opt to keep them? Are you happy with your choice?

I haven't done one yet (I need to), but my mom keeps one with the lawyer, one on the bookshelf in her living room, and I have a third copy (because I am her power of attourney and her executor) which I keep in a firesafe lock box. I believe they usually recommend against safety deposit boxes because they are frozen upon the death of the person holding the key and you can't get into them.

We personally keep ours out and easy to find. (What's the point if no one can find them?) That said, we gave copies to our parents. I am not sure how useful copies of our wills are. But, it's better than nothing if something happens to our home.

Ours are in our filing cabinet marked....WILLS. And I did give a copy to my dad since he would be executor if we both die at the same time. I like the idea of a firesafe lockbox. I just never get to buying one!

Notarized Will in home safe with a copy in the ICE [In Case of Emergency] binder. DS1 has a copy but I doubt he could find it when needed. Our sons know where the keys to the safe are kept; the ICE binder was created to assist them.

We've got it in the firesafe lockbox too. But I should send one to my brother. That needs to go on my 2012 list!

Dad had it in a filing cabinet in the attic. Seemed a little bit lax to me. It would make sense to have a digitized copy in a password protected jump drive, hard copy in a binder, and the original in safe deposit. Feels like you cover most bases.

I keep a copy in a fire and waterproof safe in the house and I gave a copy to my parents that they also keep in a safe in their house.
