5-5-5 progress and looking ahead to June

May 24th, 2012 at 04:03 pm

Last night AS and I did free weights together, so that completes the free-weight portion of my challenge. 21 of the 25 workouts are done. 2 out of my 5 categories are complete; I just need to walk up the stairs once more, ride my bike once more, and do two more Gilad workouts.

I started poking around Sparkpeople and decided that for June, I'll try to count all my calories (or estimate when I can't get exact numbers), eliminate night snacking, and try for at least 10 minutes of *vigorous* exercise every day. (In other words, my walking to daycare or other walking will be a nice addition but won't count toward my goal.)

I'll try to post everything here as well as on Sparkpeople, since I feel more supported on SavingAdvice than I ever could on another site. Wink

There are TONS of high impact exercises you can do at home in 10 minutes. You'd be amazed. My gym friends showed me a bunch. You might also look to Youtube, netflix workout videos, etc for some ideas suited to you.

Even just doing low squats over the sofa (touch your butt to the cushion and back up), push ups, crunches (with a ball is best-- more options), "superman" lifts, and abs exercises such as '6 inches' and planks (traditional and side) are great.

Awesome, I'll look those up, thanks! I was also thinking of I think it's called "mountain climbers" or something where you're in a pushup position and pull alternate legs in under you. Those things kill me! I think with the busy June we have planned, this is the best kind of challenge to ensure I get some exercise in even on my fullest days.

Mountain climbers are good, and so are burpees, which are similar. You do a jumping jack, put your hands on the ground, jump your feet out into a plank, do a push up, and then reverse it back to standing. They are brutal.

Nice going! I am also working out at home and my wife got me a kettlebell for my workouts. Holy cow, that thing can really put you through your paces, for a small piece of equipment! And it leads to amazing results, too. I think that you are doing great and there is definitely some insurance that home efforts can bring results. Keep it up!
