Quick poll

January 3rd, 2014 at 08:56 pm

Do you use a budgeting or personal finance app, software or online account, e.g., Mint, Mvelopes, QuickBooks?

I had a friend ask for a recommendation, and I could name a few, but I couldn't really advise him, because I have my own system in Google Drive spreadsheets that I'm really attached to.

It's more hands-on than a lot of the other options out there, but I find being hands-on keeps me focused, motivated and enthusiastic about my financial goals.

That made me wonder: Do those of us interested enough in finances to blog about it tend to use DIY methods or specialized software/programs/apps?

I have my own method! No software. I have lists, and basic Excel spreadsheets.

I love my Quicken. Not really use it for the budgeting tools, but for the ease of tracking everything and planning ahead.

    Quicken.

I've seen some feedback that non-accountants sometimes don't like it. (Whereas I could not imagine doing my job without software, so I certainly can't imagine managing my personal finances without software. It saves A LOT of time, and keeps everything well organized. But maybe a learning curve for newbies and non-accountants).

& I use spreadsheets too, to organize things I can't as well in Quicken.

I use Budget Simple - the free version, and am happy with it. You can get more features with the paid version.

Quicken. I love the automated reports and pie charts. I set up my categories so I can easily split out all kid-related expenses. That gives me an idea of what my expenses might be once they grow up.

QUicken. I enter all expenses for two months ahead into the register and I know exactly how much I need to have when. I love it!

MS Excel, pretty much my own method as I don't need to micro manage every expense as I have our budget dialed in extremely well.

I use my own customized worksheets to track monthly income and a simple Excel spreadsheet to track expenses and income throughout the year.

I use YNAB, and have since shortly after it was made. Smile

Mint tracks things for me (I get to check one website for my numbers instead of 14+) but my cashflow, networth, etc are done in spreadsheets. I will say that the people who are good at making "budgets" that have no basis in reality do much better with Mint because it forces them to see what they are actually spending versus what they claim they are spending.
