Financial notes, bad and good

April 29th, 2015 at 05:10 pm

The management company of our UK rental contacted us, saying they need another £558 ($893) for the renovation.

Obviously, we don't have that.

We'll probably need to borrow more from NT's mum, unless the company can wait until we receive more checks for AS's freelance work. Money we couldn't wait to use to fix up our home. Sigh.

Oh, and the rental inspection finished. Only minor stuff with the actual unit we rent out, but since our basement has a kitchen and bathroom and door with a lock, we need to either dismantle some of that stuff or apply for a permit to have it be a separate unit. Pissing away more money on stuff I don't care about, I guess.

On the upside, I got the third May utilities bill, and our total for the month is going to be $312 -- our lowest total utilities cost since last November.

Do you apart from the apartment unit there is an additional kitchen/bath area that they want you to do something with?

Yes. The previous owner was cited for renting out a section of the basement as a third unit when it wasn't zoned for that, so he'd taken out the appliances. We thought, great, guest suite and also somewhere to cook if/when we renovate our kitchen. So we put an air mattress in there, and moved an old fridge and stove into the space. Apparently now it's too much like a separate unit, even though we're not renting it out and it's not in use unless friends or family visit. And the bathroom doesn't look like it's up to code. So we have to choose: Either take out the kitchen appliances, and disable the bathroom and remove the door to the area, or apply to have it zoned as an accessory dwelling unit (in which case we'd have to update the bathroom and possibly enlarge the window for emergency access).

Either way, we're inconvenienced and probably out some money. For no reason, since we only use it to house our visitors.

That's annoying. And just for the inspection? So you could/would it all back in when that's done?
