More progress on goals, plus job doldrums

January 27th, 2011 at 12:58 am

One of AS's student loan payments went through with $121 going to principal. So that's $5843 to debt this month! This will be our biggest month maybe ever in terms of debt repayment.

AS donated $20 to the public transit nonprofit for our state, so that brings donations up to $35.

I'm kind of depressed about my job. There have been some bright spots: For instance, they took some of us out to a really nice restaurant for lunch for winning some awards on a project we'd worked on, and told us we'd get a $350 bonus in our next paycheck.

But on the other hand, people keep getting hired and promoted while I languish waiting for some kind of recognition for doubling my workload and responsibilities. And today a guy who really doesn't respect my role (proofreader) in the creative process got promoted to creative director. And then at the end of the day, he made fun of my winter gear. I mean outright laughed at and mocked my appearance. I came home and cried like I was in middle school again.

There aren't a ton of jobs out there in my field, and probably not many that pay very well. But I'll keep looking.

You are right: that is SO junior high (which I'm presently reliving with my own 12 and 13 year old girls). May the mocker get stuck in the snow and may he wish he only had YOUR winter gear to keep him warm. That is hard to be underappreciated and undervalued; remember you are more than your job and your family loves you, which is really all that matters. But that is really mean ...

I don't like that guy either...he would be one of the bullies on the grade school playground! I never understood how people could be so insensitive...in fact, those types almost seem to glory in it. I am also sorry to hear you are underappreciated. That's no fun at all. Whenever I get stressed about my work I try to remember that I'm grateful to have a job. Bless you and I hope you find something that's very fulfilling.

Wow. Did that guy think he was on the playground or something? How can you be a good creative director and not respect the role everyone plays in getting the job done? Doesn't he know when the creatives are happy and productive it makes him look better?

Sorry for the rant. That bugs me.

What a jerk. Do they have any idea how stupid their work would look without a fabulous proofreader? Idjit.

The article above will explain why you are getting more work while other people are being promoted. You have to do something about it.

That Is terrible. I don't like that guy. He sounds like a bully. I don't like bullies. I didn't have much fun in highschool and certainly don't want to repeat that in my adult life.

Congrats on the debt payment! That is amazing that you have that much available in a month to pay!

Someone who's been promoted to director level shouldn't be ridiculing subordinates. Maybe someone should tell him that. I don't like bullies, either.

Thanks guys for your sympathy. Yeah, it was really bad. Even if it was meant to be jovial or something, we don't have a friendship or even a pleasant acquaintance, so it was really out of line.

EnglishTeacher, that was a very interesting read. It helped me follow through on my recent decision not to keep trying to go above and beyond. It's not leading to a raise, or a promotion, or any kind of extra reciprocity. I offloaded a bunch of stuff on the contractor who I've been too busy to train properly. She can sink or swim and I'll help her all I can, but I'm not going to do the work of two people anymore.

It completely unprofessional for someone in a leadership position to act like that, but it does happen a lot. Some people don't seem to grow up from junior high or high school, and it leads to immature and hurtful behavior. I wish there was some insurance against this, but I think the best revenge is to be excellent and successful, and try not to let their words have effect... as hard as that may be in practice. Hang in there!

Trendy clothes are rarely useful in winter. You guys are in Minnesota, not LA, for Pete's sake.

Don't mind my next comment. I'm just trying out channeling my inner sociopath (per the ribbonfarm article).

May your "new" creative director get pneumonia.
